Kawai Hisashi began training in Kyoto under his great-uncle, Kawai Kanjiro, after graduating high school in 1961.
He was further mentored by his uncle, Kawai Takekazu, and went independent in 1981. In 1984, he opened his kiln, Sarukoden-gama, in Shigacho, Shiga Prefecture. Since then, he has continued releasing and presenting works, primarily at solo exhibitions.
