Studied under the second generation Inaba Takamichi, and engaged in pottery-making under Matsumoto Hoji in Tōtōmi (now Shizuoka Prefecture). Later, in the western part of Hekikai District in Mikawa (Aichi Prefecture), he started Nishibata ware (a type of Tokoname ware) together with Tejima Shuiji. He was commonly known as Tomijiro.
