Born in Wake Town, Okayama Prefecture. After graduating from Waki Kankaya High School, he entered the Department of Ceramics at Osaka University of Arts, dropped out in 1974, and later completed the Bizen Ceramics Center. Studied under Yamamoto Toshu and Yuichi in 1976. In 1982, he built a climbing kiln and became independent.
