After studying at the painting department of Kyoto Municipal Art School, then at the ceramics department of Kuramae High School, he went to England to study scientific wares. While in England, he became close friends with Bernard Leach and Hamada Shoji, and upon returning to Japan he joined the Takayama Kozan Science and Pottery Research Institute. In 1937, he participated in the formation of the Japan Ceramic Sculpture Association alongside Numata Ichiga and others.
