Suzu pottery 珠洲焼

Suzu ware is pottery made in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It carries on the simplicity of the Sue ware style, which was introduced by potters in the continent in the mid-Kofun era.
The old Suzu kiln carried on the Sue ware style. Suzu ware was produced in Suzu, which is located on the edge of the Noto Peninsula, for about 400 years, from the end of the Heian era through the Kamakura period and the Muromachi period. Suzu ware pieces were used as everyday items by the common people in a large area in the north of Kansai.

It was produced a lot in the Momoyama period, and was shipped all the way to Hokkaido with the northbound ships. However, in the Sengoku period, they suddenly disappeared, and became known as the “legendary ancient pottery.”
Since 1955, a lot of kiln ruins have been discovered. Archaeologists named it Suzu, and it started drawing attention.
In 1978, After about 400 years of inactivity, the restored Suzu ware kiln at the Suzu City Pottery Center (technique training center) was ignited. Later on, the number of potteries and potters increased, the unique techniques of Suzu ware were steadily carried on.
