After graduating from university, he went to China to study under Li Ruiqing, a master of calligraphy, in 1906.
In addition, after pursuing Nanga techniques and returning to Japan, he created a workshop (kiln) in Ikoma, Nara and put his efforts into creating pottery works in addition to calligraphy. He was known as Ima-Tessai (The Second Coming of Tomioka Tessai).
Furthermore, his niece is the wife of Shimizu Kosho (Todaiji Head Priest), and he also taught Kosho.
