Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture, as the son of the 2nd generation Miyagawa Kozan, he inherited as 3rd generation Kozan but lost his studio, employees, and family members in the 1945 Allied Bombing of Yokohama along with his own life. His younger brother Tomonosuke took on the family name as Kozan (4th generation) and aimed to rebuild the business, but this endeavor was abandoned when he died in 1961.
