From Takeo, Saga. Dropped out of Saga University. Studied sculptures under Koga Tadao from the Japan Art Academy and the Saga University Professor Emeritus Ogata Toshio and studied ceramics under Kazuo Taki. Started making ceramics walls at Taizan kiln in 1958. Became independent in 1966 in Tosu and moved the kiln to Tateishimachi, Tosu in 1974. Director of the Saga Fine Art Society. Member of the Prefectural Ceramic Society. Professor at Kyushu Zokei Art College. His son, Iichiro Matsuo, has taken over the kiln.
