Bakutai, whose true given name was Yutaro, was a master potter active between the Meiji period and the prewar Showa period. He was an apprentice of Kato Shuntai, who is said to be responsible for the resurgence of the Seto pottery style. He is also said to have influenced the potter Kato Tokuro.
