Left work in 1976 and studied under Harada Togetsu, receiving training in the spinning lathe. Started a kiln in 1977 and became independent. Matsuo Muzo 松尾無蔵

1944-maleFrom Iizuka, Fukuoka. Graduated from the Department of English at the Faculty of Foreign Languages at the University of Kitakyushu in 1958. After being charmed by classic works of antique pottery at Fujita Museum in 1974 while working at a high school as an instructor of English and Judo, sought to engage in pottery and began making ceramics through self-education. Built an ascending kiln using firewood in Urunokami, Iizuka the following year and started the Komuzo kiln. Researched metallic craft arts in 1984 in order to incorporate silver coloring techniques. Matsuo Tomofumi 松尾友文

1950-malekaratsu potteryFrom Karatsu, Saga. Began training and researching locally in 1974. Started a kiln named Matsuo Korai kiln in Kajiwara Kagami in 1984 and became independent. Exhibited at the Japan Craft Art Society Seibu Craft Art Exhibition and was selected starting in 1985. Held private exhibitions at the Inui Gallery in Akasaka, the Tobu in Ikebukuro, and other venues. Works focus on traditional Karatsu ware tea bowls, as well as tableware and sake vessels. (more…)

Since being selected for the Issuikai Exhibition in 1967 and 1968, activities mainly involve private exhibitions. Held the Tama Ceramic Society Exhibition at the Matsuya in Ginza. Held the Kiln Exhibition at Kakiden Gallery. Held the Tama Ceramic Exhibition at the Daimaru in Hachioji. Won the NBC Award and the Semi-Grand Prize at the Kyushu Yamaguchi Exhibition and exempt from appraisal at the exhibition. Won the Chugoku Association President’s Award at the Modern Craft Art Chugoku Exhibition. Won the Prefectural Superintendent of Education’s Award and Fine Work Award at the Yamaguchi Prefectural Exhibition. Matsuo Jiro 松尾次郎

1932-2007maleFrom Takeo, Saga. Dropped out of Saga University. Studied sculptures under Koga Tadao from the Japan Art Academy and the Saga University Professor Emeritus Ogata Toshio and studied ceramics under Kazuo Taki. Started making ceramics walls at Taizan kiln in 1958. Became independent in 1966 in Tosu and moved the kiln to Tateishimachi, Tosu in 1974. Director of the Saga Fine Art Society. Member of the Prefectural Ceramic Society. Professor at Kyushu Zokei Art College. His son, Iichiro Matsuo, has taken over the kiln. (more…)

Won the Japan Modern Craft Exhibition Modern Craft Award. Founding Member of the Japan New Craft Association. Won the Kyushu Modern Craft Exhibition Grand Prize and was a committee member. 1931-malebizen potteryFrom Kumamoto Prefecture. Graduated from the Kyoto Ceramic Experimental Institute in 1950. Later worked at Kumamoto Prefectural Industrial Experiment Station. Studied under Morino Kako from Kyoto in 1956. Entered the Bizen Ceramic Center in 1960 at the invitation of Okayama Prefectural Governor Miki Yukiharu and trained new recruits as the Director. Started a kiln in Nishikatakami, Bizen in 1973. Consecutively selected for the Japan Traditional Craft Art Exhibition and was an official member of the Japan Kogei Association.
