1958-femaleBorn in Ibaraki Prefecture. Studied at a design school and later trained in Kasama and Mashiko. In 1982, moved to Iga, Mie Prefecture, and became independent, naming her kiln Tumie-gama. No affiliation. Held two-person exhibitions at Takatsuki Kokeian, Osaka Gallery Azuchi, Senri Hankyu, and Tsu City Mie Gallery. First solo exhibition in his hometown Ibaraki. Sato Yasushi 佐藤康

1954-maleBorn in Shimane Prefecture. Studied under Yamamoto Shigeyuki at Sumiyama Craft Village in Kyoto. Became independent in 1977 in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture. Moved to his hometown in 1984. Has held solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Mito, Matsue, and Yonago. Creates a wide variety of ceramic plates, vases, and tea utensils using various ash glazes, candy glazes, and colored paintings. (more…)

Selected for the New Master Crafts Exhibition, Japan Kogei Association Kinki Branch Exhibition, the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Chunichi International Ceramic Art Exhibition, and the Japan New Craft Exhibition. Awarded Excellence Prize at the Prefectural Art Festival. Awarded an Honorable Mention at the Shikoku Exhibition of the Japan Art Association. Sato Hosen 佐藤芳泉

1926-?maleBorn in Saga Prefecture. Inherited the family business of pottery making in the traditional area of old Karatsu and studied under his father. Soha is his elder brother. He has been awarded prizes at the Kyushu-Yamaguchi Ceramic Exhibition, the Western Craft Exhibition, the Kyushu Contemporary Craft Exhibition, the New Japan Craft Exhibition, the All Japan Craft Art Exhibition, and others. Sato Toetsu 佐藤陶悦

1932-?maleBorn in Akaike Town. Real name Hirofumi. Studied under Kumagai Koyo of Agano ware in 1954. In 1961, he built a climbing kiln in Tagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture and opened a kiln of Hikosan-ware. Received the Asahi Newspaper Award at the Western Craft Exhibition. His works have been selected for the Kyushu-Yamaguchi Ceramic Exhibition and others. Became an independent artist in 1975. Held an exhibition in Fukuoka City in 1981 to commemorate his 20th anniversary. Focused on inlay, straw ash glaze, and iron glaze. (more…)

1917-?femaleBorn in Miyazaki City. Graduated from Keijo First High School. Studied Korean Goryeo and Yi Dynasty ceramics. After the war, she returned to Japan and worked with her husband, Shakuzan, in Fukuoka. Received the highest award at the Kyushu Contemporary Craft Exhibition. Sato Takumi 佐藤巧

1962-2006malemashiko potteryIn 1983, he graduated from the Saga Art College, Department of Ceramics, and the following year, he completed the Ceramics Course at the Kyoto Oriented Experiment Station. After that, he worked as a lecturer at the same university, and in 2001, he completed his master’s degree at the University of New South Wales. He died prematurely in his studio in Sasayama at the age of 44, leaving behind many works of art that were highly acclaimed overseas. (more…)

Sato Taisuke 佐藤苔助

1941-malebizen potteryBorn in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. His real name is Isuke. Influenced by Sato Takashi, a well-known local potter and lover of old Bizen ware, he learned to make pottery on the potter’s wheel. In 1969, under the guidance of Bizen potter Sakakibara Tsutomu, he built a climbing kiln in Onomichi and began making pottery in earnest. He has been awarded prizes at the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition, the Issuikai Exhibition, the Chugoku International Exhibition, the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, and others. Established Soha Limited Company in 1979. they are the fifth generation of the family to inherit the techniques and spirit of Soha pottery, which began as a branch of Saga Nabeshima and was perfected by Usui Soha, a painter in Kyoto during the Bunka era.
