Shimada Koichi 島田幸一

1937-maleBorn in Fukuoka Prefecture. After encountering Song dynasty ceramics in the National Palace Museum, he decided to pursue ceramics and left the construction company where he worked for many years. After leaving the company, he traveled all over Japan in search of materials such as clay and ashes, and built a kiln in Shimada City. He has tried his hand at Song ceramics using his own unique method. His works have been selected for the Japan Traditional Craft New Works Exhibition, the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, and Chunichi International Exhibition. Shimada Kyoko 島田恭子

1954-femalemashiko potteryBorn in Ibaraki Prefecture. Graduated from Tochigi Prefecture Pottery Training Institute in 1978, and began making pottery. First solo exhibition in Mashiko in 1980. Solo exhibition. Held a two-person exhibition with her husband, Hitoroshi, at Isejin, Mito. Solo exhibitions at Shinjuku Odakyu and Utsunomiya Seibu.Focused on overglaze painting and red painting. Shima Yukihiro 嶋幸博

1937-malebizen potteryBorn in Fukuoka Prefecture. First worked for Nippon Steel Corporation, while visiting kilns in Karatsu, Satsuma, and Arita to study. In 1965, he left the company and entered Bizen. The following year, he received training at the Bizen Training Center of the Okayama Prefectural Industrial Research Institute (now the Bizen Ceramics Center). Became independent in 1972. (more…)

Shibayama Yoshikuni 芝山吉邦

1936-maleBorn in Suginami, Tokyo. Studied under Doi Tosen. In 1965, he established his kiln in Hiratsuka. Since 1962, he has been awarded many prizes at the Nitten Exhibition and is a Nitten member. He has been awarded many prizes at the Japan Contemporary Craft Exhibition since 1973, including the Chairman’s Prize, Mr. D’s Prize, and Member’s Prize. In 1968, he joined Tojinsha, a group led by Inoue Ryosai. Toured Europe. Solo exhibitions at Osaka Central G, Nihonbashi Takashimaya and others. He has produced vases, mists, and outdoor monuments in white porcelain, black porcelain, and cinnabar. (more…)

Became independent in Nishiyama, Kyoto in 1977. His work has been selected for the Kyoto Exhibition, the Prefectural Exhibition, and others. 1949-maleIn 1971, he moved to the United States to study avant-garde ceramics. He won the silver medal at the International Exhibition of Contemporary Ceramics. Exhibited at Expo ’70, Contemporary International Sculpture Exhibition, and Yaromaika ’76. 1948-maletamba potteryBorn in Tokyo. Graduated from the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Chuo University in 1971, and studied under Ikuta Kazutaka in Tamba. Built a kiln in Washio, Hyogo Prefecture in 1975. He received the Honorable Mention at the Japan Folk Art Museum Exhibition. He was awarded the Newcomer’s Prize at the National Exhibition of Japan, and the Excellent Work Prize at the Kaiyu Exhibition. Selected for the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition and others. Solo exhibitions at Okura Gallery, Ginza, Kobe Diamond G, Minami Aoyama Green G, and Osaka Hankyu. Focuses on white painting, high-fired unglazed ceramics and slipware. (more…)

1952-maleGraduated from Tajimi Technical High School, Department of Ceramics. Completed the Gifu Prefectural Ceramics Research Institute. Established Jougama kiln in Mizunami City while assisting his family’s pottery making business. Received awards at the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition, the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, Chunichi International Exhibition, Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, and others. Studied design under Hineno Sakuzo, Ohashi Momonosuke, and Sadoyama Yasumasa, and studied glaze under Kobayashi Bun’ichi. Later became independent with Shiba kiln. Awarded the Toki City Exhibition Education Committee Chairman’s Prize, among others. Works mainly with Kizeto and luster ware. He retired after his solo exhibition in February 2017. (more…)
