1920-?malekutani porcelainWorked at the Kyoto National Ceramics Laboratory, and studied under Hineno Sakuzo and Uno Sango. Selected for and won awards at Kokuten, Kyoten, the Contemporary Art Exhibition, and the Asia Contemporary Art Exhibition. Was invited to the São Paolo Museum of Art, and held a personal exhibition with the support of the city’s Japanese consulate, and received the Brazil Art and Culture Award. Ishiyama Toshiki 石山俊樹

1948-maleBorn in Hanamaki, Iwate. Graduated from Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences. Began studying under Funaki Kenji of the Netami kiln in 1972, where he learned to use slip. Became independent in 1976. Has held personal exhibition in several locations around Hokkaido, including Maruzen in Sapporo. Ishira Emiko 伊志良エミコ

1941-maleGraduated from Tokyo University of the Arts. Studied under Fujimoto Yoshimichi and Asano Akira. Has worked as an assistant at the Tokyo University of the Arts ceramics course. Has held several personal exhibitions at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi. Creates ceramic tableware, vases, platters, and boxes in blue and white, red and white, overglaze, and gold/silver leaf. Ishitobi Katsuhisa 石飛勝久

1941-maleStudied under Ueda Tsuneji in Kyoto. Became independent in 1975. In 1984, returned to his home town and founded a kiln there. Selected for and won awards at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum Exhibition, Kokuten, and Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition, among others. Has held personal exhibitions at Osaka Hankyu. Ishizuka Misao 石塚操

1956-maleBorn in Kyoto. Graduated from Kyoto Saga Art College, and later went on to postgraduate study, while holding exhibitions at Iteza, Maronie Gallery, and Toshibi. Finished postgraduate study in 1980. Moved to Kanagawa the following year, and founded a kiln in 1982.The kiln was named the Soen kiln. It was later moved to Hamakita, Shizuoka. Has won awards including the Graduation Exhibition Award, and an Honorable Mention at the Shinsho Kogeikai Exhibition. Uses zougan, kohiki, blue porcelain, and yakishime. (more…)

Ishida Yuzo 石田有三

1946-maleBorn in Urawa, Saitama. Trained in Koishiwara, Fukuoka from 1970, and founded a kiln in Goyu, Miyazaki Prefecture in 1974. Has won prefectural exhibitions as well as other special awards, etc. Has held personal exhibitions in Miyazaki and Fukuoka. Uses white glaze with kakewake, black glaze with silver, and other novel decoration methods, and pays attention to the carving and glaze. (more…)

1945-maleBirth name Nariaki. Born in Osaka. Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts. Studied under Kiyomizu Kyubey and Yagi Kazuo. Professor at the Department of Craft at Kyoto City University of Arts. Selected for the Contemporary Crafts Exhibition and the avant-garde section of the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition; currently working freelance. Ishikawa Yoji 石川洋二

1923-maleWhile studying at Kyoto University, he was inspired by the traditional kilns of Shigaraki and Tamba, and tried his hand at firing pottery in the climbing kilns of Shigaraki/Kyo ware. Graduated from the pottery research institution attached to the Tekisui Museum of Art. Studied under Onishi Masataro and Iwabuchi Shigeya. Founded his own kiln in 1977. Since then, he has spent his life as both a potter and a farmer. Has won awards at the Kyoto Crafts Exhibition, Japan Contemporary Ceramics Exhibition, and municipal exhibitions. Ishikawa Hami 石川ハミ

She later studied under Ishida Toshun in Tamba. Trained in pottery in India, Nepal, and Thailand. Has won awards at the West Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition and the Women’s Association of Ceramic Art Exhibition. Held a joint exhibition with her husband Teru at the Muraokaya Gallery, as well as father-daughter exhibitions. (more…)
