Yamaguchi Eiji 山口榮二

1919-2006maleFrom Saga City. Made ceramics from 1945 onwards alongside the reconstruction and leadership of the Omoto religious sect. Learned the fundamentals from Kaneshige Toyo and glazing from Kato Tokuro. Selected for the Japan Ceramics Exhibition, the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and the Issui-kai Exhibition. Has held two-person exhibitions at the Ayabe Chamber of Commerce and Industry, etc. Makes a wide range of ceramics, including Oribe ware, Shino ware, cinnabar lacquerware, celadon porcelain, Tamba ware, and Shigaraki ware. 1922-?maleStudied tea bowls under Nakazato Tarouemon from Karatsu. Selected for the Chiba City Exhibition and others. Solo exhibitions in Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi and elsewhere. Won the Shindo and Tsuchiya Awards at the Yamanashi Art Association Exhibition; is a member and won the member prize. Received the Governor’s Prize at the Yamanashi Creation Exhibition, the Art Festival Prize at the Prefectural Art Festival, etc. Selected for the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition, the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, the Issui-kai Exhibition, the Japan Ceramics Exhibition, the Asahi Craft Exhibition, and Chunichi International Exhibition. Has received third place in the Kyushu Yamaguchi Exhibition, the Technique Award, the Mainichi Newspaper Award, and the RKB Mainichi Broadcasting Award. Has exhibited his works in the West Japan Ceramics Exhibition and received the Governor’s Prize in Kumamoto and Kagoshima Prefectures. Received the Nakama City Mayor’s Prize in a prefectural exhibition. Tsumura Toko 津村陶江

1953-From Kyoto City. Graduated from the Kyoto Pottery Training Institute. Trained at Raku Studio Waraku. Studied under Sakamoto Hosei from Kyoto, and set up Anaogama to make ceramics in Kameoka after that. Won the Kyoto Mayor’s Prize in the Daisan Bunmei Exhibition and was selected in the same exhibition. Focuses on tableware using the shirogesho (white slip), kohiki (white powdered-looking ceramics), and tatara (slab-building) methods. (more…)

Tsuboshima Dohei 坪島土平

1929- 2013maleFrom Osaka. Studied under Kawakita Handeishi from 1946, served as the head of craft at Hironaga Toen, and succeeded his teacher after his death. Apart from annual solo exhibitions at Osaka Takashimaya, he has done solo exhibitions at Nihonbashi, Yokohama Takashimaya, Nagoya Maruei, and Matsuzakaya. Has received an honorable mention and the Nikkei Prize in the Kinki Branch Exhibition for Traditional Crafts, etc. Selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and others. President of the Mizushima Ceramics Society. Member of this clay society. Three-person exhibitions at Kurashiki Tenmaya and other solo exhibitions. Sainen Akio 西念秋夫

1948-maleBorn in Kishiwada, Osaka. Studied under Kato Muzuji. After working at the Shinohara Ceramics Research Institute, opened the Nishinen Research Institute in 1971. Established the Todoroki kiln as an annex institute in 1978. Later used refined Senshu soil for the reconstruction of the old Toemura kiln. Recipient of the Traditional Crafts Kinki Branch Exhibition Nikkei Honorable Mention. Selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. Vice chairman of Japanese Arts and Crafts. Saito Ryuzo 齋藤隆三

1927-?maleGraduated from Showa Medical College in 1952. Studied ceramics under Kano Enryu. Began making ceramics alongside his work as a doctor and later opened a Seian kiln. Unique style primarily focused on work reminiscent of the “spring and autumn style” typical to ancient China making use of bronzeware from the Han dynasty in vases and also of the Shang Dynasty and other historical influences.
