Kai Hajime 甲斐一

1950-maleStudied under Imahashi Takako in Kyoto. After working at the Saga Prefectural Ceramic Research Institute, he worked at a kiln in Kure Pottery. Built the kiln at the foot of Mount Iidake in 1976. Won prizes at the Kyoto Prefectural Exhibition, the Kyushu Modern Industrial Exhibition, and others. Obiya Soei 帯谷宗英

1923-?maleStudied under Kagoshima Juzo and Bernard Leach. First, built a kiln in Hachioji and ten built a kiln in Ibaraki in 1970. Solo exhibitions at Ginza Matsuya, Shinjuku Odakyu, Mitsukoshi, Nagoya Maruei and others. The “Obiya Teacup” with its hand-twisting technique has a good reputation. Purchased by the Imperial Household Agency and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Succeeded in restoring an old Imari masterpiece in 1980, which became a hot topic. Awarded the Salon de Printemps prize at the Graduation Exhibition and the Honorable Mention at the Musashino Traditional Craft Exhibition. 1955-femaleBorn in Fukuyama City. Graduated from the Department of Industrial Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts. Studied under Fujimoto Yoshimichi, Tamura Koichi and Asano Akira. Upon graduation, she began working at her husband Akikawa Toshihiko’s Studio. He then moved to Sosa district, Chiba Prefecture. Onomae Kihachiro 尾前喜八郎

1938-maleHe mainly produces tableware and vases using colored earthenware and ash glaze. He won the Second Grand Prize at the Mainichi Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Education Minister’s Prize at the Kagoshima Prefectural Exhibition, the Governor’s Prize at the Kagoshima Prefectural Ceramic Art Exhibition, and the Governor’s Prize at the South Japan Art Exhibition. He has been selected for the Nitten and Japan Modern Craft Exhibition, and has been selected many times for the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition. Ono Toshiro 尾野敏郎

1903-1995malesodeshi potteryBorn in Shimane Prefecture. He studied under Yanagi Soetsu, Kawai Kanjiro, and Hamada Shoji, and later went to England with Bernard Leach. In 1942, he was designated by the government to preserve the Sodeshi kiln technique. He received the Grand Prix at the Brussels World Exposition. He held an exhibition at Mitsukoshi Department Store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo in 1970 to commemorate his 50th year in the pottery business. He is a leading figure in folk pottery. (more…)

Ono Hakuko 小野珀子

1915-1996femaleShe is the eldest daughter of Ono Kozan. She studied ceramics at the Amber Pottery run by her father.In 1992, she was designated as an important intangible cultural asset by Saga Prefecture as the holder of the “Yurikinsai, ceramic glaze underglaze gold painting” technique. In the underglaze gold glaze technique, thick gold leaf is applied to the base, a low-fire glaze is applied, and the piece is fired.Counting from the unglazed firing, the gold leaf is fired six times to give a subdued taste.
