Nara Ryutaro 奈良隆太郎

1937-maleBorn in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Commerce, Chuo University. Worked for a general insurer and aspired to become a potter in 1970. Travelled to Seto, Sanin and Tamba kiln. In 1972, he studied under Terasaka Joraku in Mashiko, where he learned the pottery technique for tea and flower arrangements. Later, he produced pottery in Aizu Hongo, Fukushima. He became an independent potter in 1979. In 1983, he formed the Soryu-kai and held an exhibit in Chigasaki. Namai Keiko 生井慶子

1934-femalemashiko potteryBorn in Mogi-machi, Tochigi Prefecture. Graduated from Toriyama Girls’ High School in Tochigi Prefecture. Studied under Fukuhara Tatsuro and Kawamura Tomozan.Trained at Mashiko Tsukamoto Pottery, Kosago kiln, Nihonmatsu Manko-yaki and Mashiko Endoji Kiln. Became an independent potter in 1979. Her work was selected for the National Exhibition. Her works are glazed with ash and lime glaze on brush strokes and underglaze iron pictures that bring out the earthiness of the pottery. Naba Housho 那波鳳翔

1936-2008maleBorn in Aioi City, Hyogo Prefecture.Started his career as a potter in around 1965.Worked at Aioiura kiln and Aioi kiln. The Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education has identified 200 sites of Heian kilns. He revived Banshu Aioi ware which had several kilns in Furuike, Naba Ninsei, and Nabano during the Edo period but disappeared in the early Meiji period. His work was selected for the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition.He is the author of “The Song of a Pottery Master”, “A Tour of Japan”, “The Singing Heart” and “Selection of a Singing Jem”. 1934-maleBorn in Gunma Prefecture. Inherited the family business and aspired to make pottery.Graduated from Kanazawa Art University.Studied glazing at the Kyoto National Ceramic Research Institute. Later, he established Nanunryu Ceramic Research Institute.In 1963, his work was entered into the Nitten Exhibition. Thereafter, awarded the Nitten Special Prize, and was a part of the selecting committee, commission, and judge.He has received the Japan Contemporary Industrial Arts and Crafts Exhibition Craft Award, the Yomiuri Newspaper Award and was a member and judge. Won the Contemporary Art Exhibition Memorial Award, TU Prize and was a member. Awarded the Mayor of Takasaki City Award at the Gunma Prefectural Exhibition. Won the special Grand Prize at the Yamanashi Zokubi Exhibition, the Governor’s Prize among others. Nagumo Koji 南雲香伺

1928-?maleBorn in Gunma Prefecture. Studied under his father, Kofu and Yasuhara Yoshiaki, and later inherited the Kofu kiln. Awarded the Jomo Newspaper Award at the Gunma Prefectural Exhibition along with other awards. He was a judge and a permanent board member. Obtained a Commemorative and Member’s award, and was a judge and councilor for the Japan Contemporary Art Exhibition. Selected for consecutive Nitten awards and is a friend of the Society. Nakaya Shinpei 中屋新平

1949-maleBorn in Kunichika, Kamo County. Won a prize for oil painting at the New Works Kansai Exhibition in 1972, and has been active as a Western-style painter ever since. Travelled to Europe four times from 1950. Won the bronze medal at Le Salon in France. A member, committee member and recipient of the Workmanship Award at the Ganyo exhibition, the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly Chairperson’s Award for Excellence, a judge, and the deputy head of the Hiroshima branch. Nakamori Fujio 中森冨士雄

1945-maleBorn in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture. Graduated from Kyoto University. After working as a reporter for the Asahi newspaper, he completed his training at Fukui Kiln. In 1975, he built a kiln in Sueno, Onyu County and started working independently. He built a ground-floor cellar kiln in mid 1980. Awarded prizes at the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Prefectural Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and the Prefectural Craftsmen’s Association Exhibition. 1938-maletobe porcelainBorn in the town of Tobe. He became independent in 1958 when he built a kiln with his father. Won the highest award at the Ehime Ceramics Competition. He was awarded many grand prizes. Selected to exhibit at the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition and Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition.
