Ishikawa Akira 石川照

1950-maleGraduated from the Landscape Gardening department at Tokyo University of Agriculture. Garden designer. Has studied pottery in Europe, India, Nepal, and Thailand. Studied under his stepfather Yasumine in Unzen in 1977, and founded a kiln in Unzen the following year. Has won awards at the West Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition and the Traditional Craft West Japan Exhibition. Also holds many personal exhibitions. (more…)

Ishii Yoshio 石井義男

1918-?maleGraduated from Meiji University. Later visited Beijin, and was inspired by the verdigris incense burner he saw there, leading him to take up ceramics. He would then occasionally travel to other countries, and what he saw inspired him to make greenware, Jun ware, decorated ceramic tiles, ceramic sculptures, tea bowls, etc. In 1963, he founded a kiln in Suginami. In 1976, he founded a kiln in Higashikurume, and his Higashikurume ware, made with clay from the site’s Jomon ruins, was picked up by the mass media. (more…)

Ishii Isao 石井功

1951-maleBorn in Kanagawa. In 1977, founded his own kiln in Nagoya, and built another one in Seto in 1983. Selected for and won awards in the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, Choza Prize Ceramic Art Exhibition, Asahi Contemporary Crafts Exhibition, and Chunichi International Exhibition of Ceramic Art, among others. Has held personal exhibitions at locations including the Odawara Aoki Gallery and Tokyo Tomoedo. (more…)

Isaka Kingo 井坂金吾

1926-maleStudied under Okuda Yasuhiro from Kagura no Kama. Later established a kiln in Funae, Mie. Has won awards at the Chunichi International Exhibition of Ceramic Art, Tokai Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and prefectural exhibitions. Mostly using ash glaze, he mainly createstea cups, tokkuri, vases, and tea utensils such as mizusashi, but also makes decorative items. (more…)

Ikehata Hiroshi 池端寛

1946-maleGraduated from the Physics department at Aoyama Gakuin Daigaku. Later began creating pottery at Yakushima, Kagoshima, and in 1974, founded an anagama kiln in Koumi. Has won the Japan Contemporary Ceramics Exhibition, among other exhibitions and awards. Has held personal exhibitions at locations including the Akasaka Inui Gallery and Maronie in Kyoto. Searches for the perfect texture with his yakishime polishing method. (more…)

Ikeda Wataru 池田渉

1910-?maleFounded a traditional anagama kiln in the foothills of Mt. Ougi in Oita. Named the style Ougiyama ware. Uses himozukuri and yakishime to create tea utensils and flower vases. Known for the beauty of the natural glaze, made over ten days and nights, and the colors created by the kiln. Has won prefectural exhibitions. (more…)

Ikeda Yoshiyuki 池田代志行

1946-1985maleTrained at the Iwao kiln in Arita and the Taiyo kiln in Imabari. In 1967, began studying under Shinoda Giichi at Asama Onsen. Began independent work in 1973. Has won awards at several exhibitions, such as the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition and the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition. Works best with zougan and shonzui. Skilled at decorating vases and platters. Ikeda Masayuki 池田雅是

1927-maleCreates kohiki and tessai at the Hitori kiln. After winning the Fukuoka prefectural exhibition in 1964, he has won several awards and exhibitions, such as the Kokugakai Exhibition and the Issuikai Ceramics Exhibition. Has been branch director of the Japan Ceramics Association and a teacher of the ceramics course at the TNC West Japan Cultural Circle. Has held personal exhibitions at several locations, including the Fukuoka branch of the Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan, the Nishitetsu Grand Hotel in Fukuoka, the Tamaya department store, and Nic. Ikeda Denpei 池田傳平

1913-?maleWorked at the Saga Ceramics Laboratory and Amakusa Junior High, and founded the Soyo kiln near the site of the old kilns from feudal times, which is home to the oldest kilns in the former Hirado Domain. Adding a modern twist to Joseon-style pottery, he creates greenware, red glaze, Tianqi porcelain, and brush decorated Karatsu. (more…)

Ikeda Taisuke 池田退輔

1923-malehonma potteryBorn in Yamagata. In 1956, founded a kiln in the gardens of the Homma Museum of Art, under the guidance of Miura Koheiji and Asano Akira. Later studied under Murase Jihei and Koyama Fujio. Creates mainly tea cups. Has held personal exhibitions since 1940, in a range of locations including Nihonbashi, Sendai, Niigata, Nagoya, Mitsukoshi in Hiroshima, Osaka Takashimaya, and Ginza Matsuzakaya. (more…)

Ikeda Shuji 池田脩二

1951-maleThe second-born son of Ikeda Itsudo, a sculptor whose work was designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of his prefecture. Founded the Jonan kiln in 1974. Selected for Nitten five years in a row from 1976. Selected for and won awards at the Japan Contemporary Crafts Exhibition, and gained an exemption from examination. Ikegami Eiichi 池上栄一

1931-maleFounded the Eiichi kiln, which produces Kosugi ware, in 1970. Revived Kosugi ware, an old style from the late Edo period famous for its duck-shaped tokkuri (sake bottles). Born in Kanazawa. After graduating from Kanazawa College of Art, gained several accolades. He is director of the Asian Art Association, a judge of the Asia Modern Art Exhibition, Shinso Kogeikai member, Japan Ceramics Association member, former Nipputen director and judge, Toyama Industrial Artists League member, director of the prefecture’s Design Association, member of the city’s Industrial Artists League, member of the Takaoka Industrial Artists League, etc. (more…)
