Tsuchitani Zuiko III (Real name was Tsuchitani Minoru) was born in Kyoto City in 1928. He was the third generation of Tsuchitani Zuiko, descended from Kiyomizu Rokubey the 1st (1738-1799). Zuiko the 2nd was the head of the Zuiko Kiln in Imakumano, which he opened after splitting off from the Rokubey kiln in Gozozaka opened by Rokubey the 1st.
After graduating from Kyoto Technical College (now Kyoto Institute of Technology) with a bachelor’s degree in ceramics, and from Doshisha University in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in economics, he studied under his father, Zuiko II.
He studied celadon glaze, cinnabar glaze, oil drop tenmoku glaze, and glazes in general, including underglaze blue. He also devoted himself to reforming his studio, devising new examples of kiln construction, and devising new methods of molding and firing.
1977 Certified as a traditional craftsman of Kiyomizu-yaki
1990 Awarded the highest prize at the Kyoto and Kiyomizuyaki pottery exhibition.
2009 Decoration of Honor Zuiho-Tanko (Japanese Order of Merit, the sixth of the six Zuiho awards)
