Hangai teishin 16th 十六代 半谷貞辰

soma pottery

He is the 16th generation potter of the Hangai Kiln.
The Kiln is a descendant of the branch family of Hangai Kyukan, a warrior of the Soma clan in the Genroku period (1688–1704) , the founder of Ohori Soma ware.
In addition to the traditional Soma ware of blue cracks, painting of a running horse, and niju-yaki (by fitting the inside and outside of the vessel before firing, the entire vessel becomes a double-layered structure), he and his wife Kikue were making new designs with camellia and wild flower motifs, but the climbing kiln was completely destroyed in the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. He and his wife were also forced to evacuate due to the nuclear accident that followed.

As he moved from one evacuation site to another, he dropped in on Mr. Shimizu of the Sendatsu Kiln, who was an old acquaintance of his, and he offered to let him use his kiln and tools, so he resumed making pottery at the Sendatsu Kiln.
The Sendatsu kiln was opened in 1971 by Shimizu Fumihiro, a potter in Fukushima City. He has been producing ceramics with light colored glaze using kaolin ceramic stone from Mt. Sendatsu.
