Born as the son of the feudal retainer of the Fukuoka Domain and studied prose and poetry under the great scholar Masuyama. Later studied Nanga under Yoshitsugu Baizan and the Haizan father and son. At the time of the Bakumatsu, worked in the affairs of state together with Toyama Mitsuru and others, but studied Nanga exclusively once the Meiji era started. Excelled in elaborate landscape and portrait paintings.
Also excelled in ceramics.
